While the focus of this magazine is usually photography (no pun intended), this issue is somewhat different. It’s an interview issue; not a new idea conceptually but these aren’t pro skaters talking about their sponsors and that thing that happened on tour that one time. These are interviews with old friends who grew up in very different corners of the world, whose lives have been shaped by skateboarding and have contributed a lot, in one way or another.
Broadly speaking, these are conversations to do with creativity; an aspect that used to be an intrinsic part of skating but somehow feels a bit endangered lately..

Bryan Botelho- b/s k/f in Los Angeles; photo: Richard Hart
This was the cover of PP4 and came from a Northern Co trip to LA.
The new NorCo video ‘Helen’ by Zach Chamberlin is available now, and Chris Athans’ part just went online and features some really legit SF shredding..

Glen Fox- b/s k/f, Roma; photo: Richard Hart
Makin’ moves at the Gino gap; this one comes from PP15 and Glen’s new video part, out now..

Soy Panday regularly spends ten hours drawing a skateboard graphic, so I thought it only fitting to spend ten seconds drawing his, for this new guest board on Northern Co.
I enjoy sharing a bottle of wine with Soy, though you’ll notice that my glass is half empty while his is half full..
Cheers.
-Richard Hart
P.S. Graphic tastes best on dark red board.

Ryan Flores / Jameel Douglas / James Sayres, SF 2017; photo: Richard Hart
The last time I hung out with San Francisco filmer Ryan Flores was exactly three years ago. At that point, his video was "nearly finished". So when he posted yesterday that it was out, I thought for sure it was an April Fools’ Joke. But no, 'MERLOT' is finally here and worth the wait; a proper SF video full of cutty spots and raw street shredding. Good soundtrack, too.
That was a long 'nearly', Ryan..

Ruben Spelta, Paris; photo: Richard Hart
At least there’s (currently) no shortage of skating on the interweb, including a new Ruben Spelta part on Free mag..

Luka Pinto, Rouen; photo: Richard Hart
Luka Pinto’s new part is out now, courtesy of Free Mag.
It’s taken from the full-length ‘Pandora’s Box’ video- coming soon- which Luka (mostly) filmed and edited, showcasing the skate scene on the remote island of Jersey.

Eddie Cernicky- ride-on grind, Paris; photo: Richard Hart
I had to stand on a fragile roof to shoot this, but it was definitely a sketchier situation for Cernicky..
From PP16, out now..

Tony Miorana- f/s air, SF; photo: Richard Hart
This photo is from a previously unpublished roll of film documenting one night at a ramp party in San Francisco, back in 2001.
Full article in PP16. Excerpt from text:
In contests, people have ‘runs’, routines are perfected, time is called. There are pads and helmets, prominent sponsor logos. It’s all a bit stiff and serious.
But a heated ramp session with spontaneity and yelling and a keg of beer, on a ramp with a pentagram spray-painted on it, in a warehouse at midnight in a sketchy neighbourhood in a remote corner of San Francisco..? Helter skelter.

Josh Feist- feeble transfer, New Jersey; photo: Richard Hart
This one is from the East Coast article in PP16.
On a related note, there’s an excellent interview with Eli Morgan Gesner on the Slam City site, basically covering the history of New York skateboarding, and more..
